Alpaca Craft

Alpacas are valued for their fleece. The fleece is very soft, warm and hypoallergenic. It is less scratchy and itchy than sheeps wool. Alpaca fleece can come in many colours. There are 22 recognised fleece colours ranging from white to fawns to browns to black. There are also greys and rose greys.

To get from fleece to wool there is a multi-stage process. First of all the fleece has to be combed and carded to remove as much debris as possible. It is then taken off the carder in long strips known as rovings and is then ready for spinning. The rovings are spun and plied to produce wool, which is then hanked, washed and wound into balls ready for knitting.

Once the wool is ready we use it to create a large variety of different items. Ranging from scarfs to teddy bears there are many things we can create from the wool. Below are photos of our craft items.
